Description
What happens when poetry can no longer speak only of love?
मैं इश्क़ नहीं लिख सकती अब is a thought-provoking Hindi poetry collection that looks beyond romance and enters the deeper realities of human life. It follows the voice of a woman who searches for herself while confronting society, religion, the nation and the systems that attempt to define her identity.
The poems speak about love, loneliness, death, memories, womanhood, social injustice, dignity, freedom, anger and the changing sensitivities of the human mind. There is pain in these verses, but not defeat; anger, but not hatred; and compassion, but never silence.
When daughters cannot safely return home, books are burned, caste is placed before a person’s name, religion is made greater than humanity and a woman’s body receives more attention than her soul, writing only about love is no longer easy. Poetry then becomes a question, an act of resistance and, at times, a testimony.
“मैं इश्क़ नहीं लिख सकती अब” is not a rejection of love. It is the voice of a restless and awakened mind that believes there are still many urgent conversations left to be written. Perhaps when the world becomes more just and asking questions is no longer considered a crime, love can once again become the subject of poetry.
